Marc Bijl Marc Bijl’s work investigates socio-political issues, often through the examination of the function of rules and symbols. His interventions, installation and videos aim to challenge accepted notions of social authority and political hegemony and question the archetypes that propagate religious, national or corporate myths. Bijl deploys an iconoclastic, punk aesthetic to create a form of protest, acting as an urban guerrilla/social activist who intervenes in public space. Bijl questions how we perceive the notion of this space and the dominance of the media in shaping our perception of the state of the world. Bijl investigates not only the violence that is the result of political confrontation and religious fundamentalism but also the ‘soft’ violence that is exercised upon individuals in their daily lives by dominant forms of authority. Graffiti, slogans, flags, performances, and such archetypes are appropriated and subverted to challenge stereotypical notions of authority and given truths. For ‘Channel Zero’, Marc Bijl will make an intervention with graffiti in the building inspired by the Dutch liberal poet Bernard de Mandeville and his 'The Fable of the Bees or Private Vices, Public Benefits'.
